4granny smith apples - Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious
⅔cupcoconut sugar - brown sugar, or granulated sugar
½cupold fashioned rolled oats
½cupall purpose flour - or gluten free flour
⅓cupunsalted butter - softened and room temperature
2tspcinnamon
1tspground nutmeg
¼tspsalt
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a square baking dish with butter.
Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler or knife. Slice into thin strips. Remove any seeds, hard parts or skin that are on the slices.
Add sugar, flour, oats, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to a bowl. Mix together with a fork or pastry cutter. Then continue breaking apart the butter with your fingers. The mixture should be clumpy with butter broken into pea-size pieces.
Add the sliced apple to the greased baking dish. Spread the oat mixture evenly on top. Bake for 30 minutes, until top is golden brown and apples are tender.
Let cool 10 minutes, then scoop on to plates and serve with whipped cream or ice cream. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes:
The recipe keeps well up to 4 days in an airtight container in the fridge. Leftovers can be reheated in the microwave.
Peel the apples with a vegetable peeler and use an apple slicer. Then slice each apple in half again for the perfect size.
No need to arrange the apples in any sort of pattern, Just dump them into the dish and spread them evenly as much as possible.
Prep the butter in advance by letting it sit on the counter to fully soften. This will produce the perfect oat crumble consistency.
You can use a fork and your fingers to mix the crumble together. I prefer to start mixing with a fork and then use fingers to break it apart further.
