Kitchen Equipment Used
- Vegetable peeler - I like the swivel ones as they peel sweet potatoes easier.
- Large baking sheet - these are my favorite because you can cook more stuff!
Step-By-Step Instructions 👇👇
Full ingredients and instructions are also in the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.
STEP 1: Preheat the Air Fryer
Turn on your air fryer and set it to 375°F. Let it run while you prep the sweet potatoes. Preheating helps the fries start cooking immediately, which makes them crispier.
STEP 2: Cut the Sweet Potatoes
Wash, peel, and cut 1 ½ lbs of sweet potatoes into sticks about ¼ inch thick. Try to keep them close in size so they cook evenly.
(Optional: soak the fries in cold water for 20 minutes, then pat dry with a clean towel — this removes extra starch and helps with crispiness.)
STEP 3: Coat the Fries
Place the sweet potato sticks in a large bowl. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp cornstarch over them (optional, but adds crunch). Then drizzle 3 Tbsp olive oil on top. Add 1 tsp paprika, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper.
Use your hands or a spatula to toss everything together until the fries are well coated.
STEP 4: Load the Air Fryer Basket
Arrange the fries in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Don’t overcrowd — if the basket is too full, the fries won’t crisp. It’s better to cook in two batches if needed.
STEP 5: Cook the Fries
Air fry for 25–30 minutes. Halfway through cooking, remove the basket and shake it well so the fries cook on all sides. Toward the last 5 minutes, check on the fries to make sure they don’t burn. Fries are done when they’re golden brown, crispy on the edges, and tender inside.
STEP 6: Make the Dipping Sauce
While the fries are cooking, grab a small bowl. Mix together 1 cup mayonnaise, ½ cup ketchup, 1 Tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tsp paprika. Stir until smooth and creamy.
STEP 7: Serve and Enjoy
Transfer the fries to a serving plate and sprinkle with a pinch of salt if you like. Serve hot with the creamy dipping sauce on the side.
Recipe Tips
- Cut fries into even sticks. This helps them cook at the same rate.
- Thinner fries = crispier fries. If you like extra crunch, slice a bit smaller.
- Don’t overload the basket. Too many fries at once will steam instead of crisp.
- Shake halfway through. This gives you golden edges on all sides.
- Check during the last 5 minutes. Every air fryer is different, so keep an eye to prevent burning.
- Sprinkle extra salt before serving. It brings out the flavor even more.
Fun Serving Ideas
- Toss with parmesan cheese right after cooking.
- Add cayenne pepper for spicy fries.
- Sprinkle with fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro.
- Turn into loaded fries with melted cheese and bacon bits.
- Pair with a garlic aioli or chipotle mayo instead of ketchup.
How To Store Leftovers
- Refrigerate: Store cooled fries in an airtight container for 2–3 days.
- Reheat: Air fry at 375°F for 5 minutes to bring back the crisp. Avoid microwaving.
FAQs
Nope! Leaving the skin on adds texture and fiber. Just scrub them clean before slicing.
Usually it’s because the basket is too full. Cook in smaller batches and shake halfway. Adding cornstarch can also help.
It’s optional. Soaking for 20 minutes removes starch and can make them crispier, but if you’re short on time, skip it — they’ll still turn out great.
Yes! Par-cook them for 15 minutes, let cool, and freeze on a baking sheet. Store in a freezer bag and finish air frying straight from frozen.
