Easy Pizza Breadsticks
There are so many fun ways to use refrigerated pizza crust in homemade recipes. Recently, I made homemade pizza pockets which were a total hit with the whole family.
- This is a quick and easy recipe that the kids can help put together with you.
- The ingredients are simple and budget-friendly.
- Most kids love pizza – so these are an automatic win in most households.
- There’s nothing quite like fresh pizza crust, warm and straight from the oven!
Recipe Ingredients
CRUST: Pick up a tube of refrigerated pizza crust at the store. It’s easy and saves time.
FILLING: Buy a can of pizza sauce or use pasta sauce. Grate some mozzarella cheese or use cheddar cheese if you prefer.
PEPPERONI: You can use thinly sliced pepperoni, turkey pepperoni, pepperoni sausage (and slice yourself) or salami.
TOPPINGS: A few toppings are sprinkled on top to add flavor to the crust. You’ll need a bit of olive oil, dried oregano, dried basil and garlic powder. Lastly, parmesan cheese is sprinkled on top. Feel free to use fresh or container versions from the store.
Recipe Variations
Try substituting pepperoni for your favorite sliced meat, salami, turkey, ham, chorizo, or any other favorites.
Any additions to the inside of the pizza breadsticks need to be small. This makes it easy to seal and twist. For example, crust pineapple, finely chopped bell pepper, feta cheese, or fresh basil would work.
How To Make Twisted Pizza Breadsticks
Here are the basics to make this EASY pizza breadstick recipe!
- Roll out the tube pizza dough, slice it in half lengthwise.
- Add pizza sauce, pepperoni and cheese to one side of the dough according to the recipe instructions below.
- Place the empty dough on top, slice into 1″ strips, seal edges, and twist.
- Sprinkle herbs and cheese on top.
- Bake until edges are golden brown.
To serve, add to a plate along with a small bowl of pizza sauce or marinara. Dip the breadsticks into the sauce as you eat them.
Storing Leftovers
These will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. You can reheat in the oven or microwave.
Tips For Breadsticks
- Roll out the dough onto a large cutting board or clean counter space. If you place it directly on the baking sheet with parchment, it tends to stick.
- If the dough is misshapen, cut edges into a rectangle shape. It’s okay if edges are slightly wavy.
- Use a pizza cutter to make dough slices – it’s much easier than a knife.
- Use inside filling ingredients sparingly. As you twist the breadsticks they will naturally squeeze out the edges. Less is more with this recipe.
- Twist the breadsticks two times and add them to a baking sheet. You might need to use 2 baking sheets. It’s okay to bake them both at the same time. If possible, place them on the same rack in the oven.
- Brush the tops of the breadsticks with oil. I used olive oil, but any cooking oil will work for this. Butter or cooking oil spray are also options.
