What To Put On Your Toast In The Morning

Many of the ingredients used to make these easy breakfast toast ideas are easily found at your grocery store, or they’re already in your pantry.

  • AVOCADOS: Ripe avocados are perfect to mash onto toast. Ripe avocados have darker skin and will be soft when you squeeze them. If the avocado is too squishy then it will probably be overripe. I like to buy my avocados when they’re firm but a little soft when pushed with your thumb. That way they’re nice and ripe in a day or two at home.
  • CREAM CHEESE: This is another great toast spread. Cream cheese is easier to spread onto toast when it’s softened to room temperature.
  • NUT BUTTER: You can use any kind of nut butter or seed butter for your toast recipes. Almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter, and sunflower seed butter are all great options.
  • DARK CHOCOLATE CHIPS: Choose dark chocolate chips to help cut back on unnecessary added sugar.
  • VEGETABLES: A variety of veggies are used in the savory toast recipes including tomatoes, cucumber, sprouts, and radishes.
  • FRUIT: Fresh fruit tastes great on toast. These recipes use strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, bananas, and kiwi.
  • SEEDS: Seeds make a wonderful superfood topping on toasts and add protein and healthy fats. These recipes use hemp seeds and chia seeds. You could also use sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and ground flaxseed.
  • EGGS: I’m using a fried egg on top of one of the recipes. I’m sure you already know this, but eggs taste delicious on top of toast. Especially scrambled or sunnyside-up eggs.

Best Bread For Breakfast Toast

When choosing bread, I like to go for sprouted grain bread with low added sugar. My favorites are Dave’s Killer Bread and Food For Life Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. You can also choose a keto or low-carb bread like chia classic bread from Queen St Bakery. Or a fresh sourdough from a local bakery!

How To Make Breakfast Toast

  1. CHOOSE YOUR SPREAD: A good breakfast toast always starts with a good spread! There is a variety to choose from including nut butter or seed butter, cream cheese, a regular good quality butter, mayonnaise, jam, hummus, tahini or mashed avocado.
  2. ADD TOPPINGS: Add your favorite sweet or savory toppings depending on the flavor of toast you want to make.
    1. SAVORY: Consider vegetables like cucumber, radishes, sprouts, mushrooms, green onion and tomatoes. This can also be topped with cheese.
    2. SWEET: Try fresh fruits like berries, bananas, and kiwi. Top with dark chocolate chips or fresh herbs like basil (which tastes wonderful with berries).
  3. SPRINKLE NUTS AND SEEDS (Optional): For added protein and healthy fats, you can sprinkle chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, or chopped nuts.
  4. SEASON: This will depend on whether you chose a sweet or savory option. You can season with salt and pepper, paprika, everything bagel seasoning, hot sauce, cinnamon, a drizzle of honey, or real maple syrup.
