What Is Cauliflower Rice?

Cauliflower rice is an easy kitchen hack to have in your back pocket. It can be used for a variety of recipes. It’s inexpensive to make (cauliflower is usually pretty cheap). And it’s low carb so if you’re looking to limit whole grains in some recipes, then cauliflower rice is a great option.

Cauliflower rice is basically rice that’s chopped into small pieces in a food processor. Technically you can also use a cheese grater, but it takes more time and arm muscle. The food processor can create your riced cauliflower in 30 seconds!

Grocery stores usually do sell riced cauliflower in bags. But you never really know how fresh those are, plus they always mark up the price. It’s so easy to make your own, you can freeze the extra too, so there’s a lot of benefits to trying this method.

Cauliflower Rice In A Food Processor

There are two main ways you can create homemade riced cauliflower. The first is by using a cheese grater and doing it by hand. This method works well if you don’t have a food processor. But if you do have one, then it will save you a lot of time and create smaller pieces.

How To Make Cauliflower Rice

  1. Cut the cauliflower into chunks and remove the stem. Break into smaller pieces with your hands. Discard the leaves.
  2. Add half of the cauliflower to the food processor. Turn to the low setting and blend for 30 seconds.
  3. Once it looks like rice stop there, otherwise it will get mushy. Repeat with the other half of the cauliflower.

What Can You Use Cauliflower Rice For?

Once you make cauliflower rice you can use it for any recipe that calls for riced cauliflower. Some common ways to use it are in:

  • Homemade cauliflower pizza crust
  • Stir frys
  • Wraps and burritos
  • As a substitute in rice bowls
  • As a substitute for fried rice

If you would like to eat the cauliflower rice on its own, add it to a frying pan with a bit of oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 8-10 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent any burning. Drizzle olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon on just before serving. Season with more salt and pepper.

How Long Does Cauliflower Rice Last?

I recommend using the cauliflower rice right away, then freezing the rest. If you leave the cauliflower rice in the fridge for longer than 2 days it can start to create sulphur smell. Freezing it will eliminate the smell and preserve it for longer.

Can You Freeze Riced Cauliflower?

Yes. Add the riced cauliflower to a ziploc freezer bag and remove as much air as possible. Lay it flat in the freezer to help save space.
