Ingredients to make recipe including pre-made angel food cake, bowl of strawberries, box of jell-o, and container of coolwhip whipped topping.

Recipe Ingredients

Only four ingredients are needed to make this delicious dessert. All of these can easily be found at your local grocery store. Here’s an overview of what you’ll need with the full recipe at the bottom of this post.

STRAWBERRY JELLO – This recipe calls for a 3 oz. box of strawberry jell-o powder, but you can use raspberry or even lemon jello as well.

ANGEL FOOD CAKE – An 8″, pre-made, plain angel food cake will save time and mess made from baking a fresh cake. Use a pre-made angel food cake, but you can also bake a cake from scratch or use an angel food cake mix.

COOL WHIP – You can find cool whip in the freezer section of the grocery store.

STRAWBERRIES: This recipe calls for fresh strawberries. I don’t recommend frozen strawberries because they will hold more liquid and just won’t taste the same.

Pro Tip: Let frozen cool whip thaw overnight in the fridge before using. It will produce a creamier consistency that’s easier to work with.

Flavor Additions

Strawberry angel food cake doesn’t need much help as it is already the best dessert as is. But here are a few things you can do to add a little more flavor.

LEMON ZEST – Zest a lemon and sprinkle on top of the angel food cake dessert for a little citrus flavor.

CREAM CHEESE LAYER – Cream cheese is a wonderful flavor on anything sweet and can be added to the bottom of a serving bowl with the dessert sitting on top.

How To Make Strawberry Angel Food Cake Dessert

This dessert comes together in two steps if you are using cool whip or another pre-made cream cheese or topping.

  1. JELLO – Use the instructions on the box, and in a large bowl, mix boiling water and the jello powder together and place in the fridge until almost set.
  2. MIX – Stir the cool whip into the strawberry jello mixture.
  3. ANGEL FOOD CAKE – Separate the angel food cake into large pieces and mix them into the strawberry mixture. Press angel food cake pieces into the strawberry jello mixture making sure to coat the cake evenly.
  4. REFRIGERATE – Add the angel food cake dessert to a casserole dish, cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and refrigerate until set. 1-2 hours.

If you want fresh whipping cream for your cake, simply whip a full-fat cream until it reaches your desired consistency.

Pro Tip: Save a few fresh strawberries to add to the top of pound cake as the dessert for a beautiful presentation.

How To Store

Strawberry angel food cake won’t last long if your family loves sweet treats, but if you find yourself needing to store this dessert, here are a few helpful tips.

  • REFRIGERATE – This will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • FREEZE – This recipe won’t freeze well so I don’t recommend it.

Recipe Tips

  • Let whipped topping thaw overnight in the fridge before using. It will produce a creamier consistency that’s easier to work with.
  • Use a store-bought angel food cake for this recipe. It’s just not worth the time to make one. The cake will be soaked in the dessert mixture and all the hard work to make one will be lost.
  • Use fresh strawberries if possible. They will create better results. However, if they’re out of season and too expensive, then frozen ones will also work.
  • Angel food cake should be ripped into large chunks, not small bite-size pieces. The chunks will shrink down as they absorb the dessert liquid and create the perfect consistency for this style of dessert.
  • For best results, let the dessert chill in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours before serving. You can also make this recipe the night before your plan to serve it.
  • Save a few fresh strawberries to add to the top of the dessert for a beautiful presentation.

Ways To Serve

Strawberry angel food cake is best served on its own, but there are a few ways to decorate the dish.

  • POWDERED SUGAR – Sprinkle a little powdered sugar along the edge of a plate for decoration.
  • FRESH MINT – Add some fresh mint for color and flavor.
  • ICE CREAM – Everything tastes better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Common Questions

What is the difference between strawberry shortcake and strawberry angel food cake?

Shortcake is made using butter which gives it a richer flavor. Fluffy angel food cake calls for egg whites making it a light, airy cake.

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Frozen strawberries are available year-round and can be used if fresh strawberries are out of season. Frozen strawberries can save time, but will add more moisture and just won’t taste the same as fresh.

Can I use a different jello in my strawberry angel’ food cake dessert?

Yes, instead of using strawberry jello, you can use lemon, raspberry, or any other kind of jello you can find. Just pair the jello flavor accordingly with the fresh fruit or berries you choose.
