How To Use Homemade Spice Blends

There are so many ways you can use these spice blends! I recommend rubbing the spice into raw meat to get the maximum flavor. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Chicken – Sprinkle 1-2 tsp of spice rub onto raw chicken and rub it in. You can use any of these mixes for oven baked chicken legs, air fryer chicken thighs, on a whole chicken with roasted root vegetables, or with air fryer chicken legs. The spice mixes can also be used to barbecue any meats, including chicken.
  • Beef – Add 1-2 tsp of spice blend to season your ground beef, add to your homemade meatballs, or season a steak before barbecuing.
  • Pork – Season your pork chops with 1-2 tsp of any spice blend before pan frying, barbecuing, or baking them.
  • Fish – Sprinkle 1/2 tsp overtop of cod or salmon fillets before baking in the oven. Season white fish for fish tacos.
  • Soup – These spice blends can be used to flavor any soup you’re making including hamburger soup, lentil tortilla soup, or instant pot chicken taco soup.
  • Stir Fry – Add 1 tsp of spice mix to a vegetable stir fry.

Storing Tips

  • All spices are shelf-stable and never truly expire. However, the potency of flavor will start to disappear the longer it is stored.
  • Dried spices can lose freshness after about 5-6 months. You can check if spices need to be replaced by smelling them – if the fragrance is barely there, then it’s probably a good idea to grab a new package.
  • I like to do a spice purge every 6 months refreshing my whole spice drawer with new ones. This just makes it easier to keep track of.

Tools I Recommend

Here are a few things that make homemade spice blends so much easier!

  • Empty Spice Jar Set – Keep all your spices in matching glass jars with this matching jar set. These are the same jars I used in the photos.
  • Mini Mason Jars – An easy way to store a couple spice blends and reuse the jars for other purposes when you run out.
  • Label Maker – I love my DYMO label maker and use it for almost everything, including labeling my spices.
  • Steel Spice Funnel – Avoid spilling and use one of these to add your spice mix to the jar.
