Air Fryer Hot Dogs and Buns

If you haven’t tried making hot dogs in the air fryer yet, you are in for a wonderful surprise! Crispy hot dogs can be achieved quickly and easily – you may never go back to grilling them again!

  • CRISPY – Hot dog buns can be toasted and hot dogs can get slightly crispy skin if you cut slits in them!
  • FAST – You only need 8 minutes for perfectly cooked hot dogs.
  • DELICIOUS – Add your family’s favorite toppings for a delicious meal.

This recipe will work with any style of air fryer including the one that I used, the Ninja Foodi. Now you don’t have to wait until summer grilling season to enjoy this classic family favorite.

Recipe Ingredients

The air fryer is the perfect way to cook your hot dogs! Circulating hot air cooks and creates the perfect tender juicy inside with a crispy outside. They’re so good you’ll never want to boil, grill or microwave them again! Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy, easy hot dog recipe:

  • BEEF HOT DOGS – choose your favorite hot dog wieners. Any brand will work here including turkey dogs. Larger smokies can also work but will take a bit more time.
  • HOT DOG BUNS – Precut buns are certainly the most convenient. These can be toasted in the air fryer or served fresh as-is. Basic hot dog buns, pretzel buns or another bun that fits the shape and length of the hot dog will work.

Topping Ideas

Grab your favorite condiments including ketchup, mustard, relish, sauerkraut, or these other favorites:

  • BBQ Sauce
  • Baked Beans – use our beans n franks recipe or canned beans.
  • Chopped onions – we prefer red onions for the slightly sweet taste.
  • Add Cheese – Slices of cheddar cheese can be added at the last minute of cooking in the air fryer.
  • Coleslaw – We love the tanginess of hot dogs.
  • Chili – Make chili cheese dogs

How To Make Air Fryer Hot Dogs

Making hot dogs in the air fryer couldn’t be easier! Here’s an overview of what you’ll need with the full instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post (just keep scrolling).

  1. COOK HOT DOGS – First, place hot dogs in the air fryer basket. Next, set the air fryer to 400°F and cook the hot dogs for 6-8 minutes depending on how darkened you like them (I cooked mine for 6 mins).
  2. ADD BUNS – Next, using a pair of tongs, add each hot dog to a bun and place it back in the air fryer. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Instead, place them in a single layer. Cook for an additional 2-4 minutes (depending on how crispy and toasted you want the buns. I cooked mine for 2 minutes).
  3. ADD TOPPINGS – Now, remove the hot dogs with buns from the air fryer with a pair of tongs and add it plates. Spread your favorite toppings on top and serve them immediately.

Cooking Frozen Hot Dogs In Air Fryer

Yes, you can cook your hot dogs straight from frozen! The process is pretty simple, here’s how to do it:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Place the hot dogs in a single layer in the air fryer and cook for 6-7 minutes.
  3. Remove from air fryer and add to buns and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store your leftover hot dogs separately from the buns in order to prevent sogginess. These can easily be reheated for future meals.

  • TO REFRIGERATE – Cooked hot dogs can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. These can be microwaved to reheat or popped back in the air fryer (see below).
  • FOR FREEZING – Leftover hot dogs can also be frozen. Let them cool completely before wrapping them in plastic wrap and placing them in a large freezer bag. Store the buns and hot dogs separately to prevent soggy buns.

Reheating Leftover Hot Dogs In Air Fryer

It’s easy to reheat leftovers back in the air fryer:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
  2. Place the leftover hot dogs in a single layer in the air fryer.
  3. Cook for 2-3 minutes (with or without buns), then add toppings and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • For the first batch of hot dogs, check them after 6 minutes. Every air fryer is a bit different and may cook hotter, faster or slower. You can use these times as a guide, but it’s always important to do a check when you’re cooking something new in your air fryer and following a recipe.
  • Only cook as many hot dogs that will fit in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If you stack them on top of each other, you won’t get the crispy results.
  • You can preheat the air fryer for more even cooking. Although, it’s not always necessary.
  • Some people enjoy cutting slits on the top of the hot dog. These can get slightly crispy and can help to hold the toppings ingredients better.

Side Dishes To Serve Alongside With

  • SALAD – try our quinoa salad or burger salad.
  • CHIPS – a classic to serve with hot dogs.
  • BAKED BEANS – try our beans and franks recipe!
  • TATER TOTS – cook them in the air fryer for crispy results!
  • FRENCH FRIES – Try regular fries or sweet potato fries.
